How to create thematic map charts

Thematic map charts show some data as the size of some graphical symbol.

Let's create a map chart of the tax revenues of European countries:

Our data consists of three columns, the name of the country, the tax revenue as a percent of GDP and the tax revenue in million euros.The %GDP column will be used for coloring the map, the MM€ column will determine the size of an euro sign.

1. Get a picture of an euro sign, eg. create in Paint or OpenOffice Draw or download one from the internet.

2. Select the data table, including the column headers.

3. Select the menu item Insert/EuroOffice Map Chart. A dialog appears.

4. Make sure "Data series in rows" and "First row as label" is checked. Then click "Next >>".

5. In the next dialog, select "Europe" as teh database to be used, the data range contains "Countries", and display them over "a continent: Europe". Then click "Next >>".

6. In the third dialog select "Thematic" as the subchart type, then click the ... button next to "Figure" to select the image file that will be used for the chart, in this case the euro.gif file. The subchart size can best be determined by trial-and-error, experience with different sizes and see how it looks.

7. After clicking "Create" you can see the result:
